New Year’s Resolution – Be Present

The New Year is upon us and already people are starting to worry about what they can do to keep their jobs until 2011.  Of course there are a ton of things you can and should do, but I think the most important thing you can do is be present.  That means being at work when you should be and while you are at work, be focused on work.  Here are a few easy changes you can make in the New Year:

  • Be at your desk and ready to work 10 minutes before your designated start time.  Most employer expect you to clock in early and do not pay you the extra 10 minutes.  It is a matter of dedication and work ethic.  It is expected that you are clocked in and ready to start work right at your start time…not hanging your coat, getting coffee, etc.
  • Don’t be a clock watcher . . . You may think that no one notices that you are always ready to leave for lunch at 11:59 or that your computer is always shut down by 4:59, but they do.
  • Avoid getting caught up in idle chit chat or office gossip, none of it is so important that it can’t wait until lunch or after work.
  • Don’t call off unnecessarily . . . We all get sick and going to the office when you are really ill is not advisable, it spreads germs and puts your coworkers at risk.  However, if you are just not feeling too good or you were up late the night before, drag yourself into work and deal with it.  Calling off lets the whole team down.  Only call off when absolutely necessary and try to give as much notice as possible.

In 2010 make it your New Year’s Resolution to be present and you may find you still have a job in 2011 🙂
