High School Diploma VS. GED

Does it make a difference to employers whether you obtain a high school diploma or get your GED?

School is a huge part of life when you’re young. The traditional path isn’t always the route that students choose however.

There are several reasons why someone might choose to not finish high school. Maybe they needed to help the family out with bills, take care of a sick family member or even start their own family…all common reasons to not finish high school. But the good news is that students who do not get their diploma always have the option to go back and earn their General Educational Development, or GED.

*According to the U.S. Census Bureau, more than 8.5 million people over the age of 25 have a GED.

So, how can a GED impact your career?

The most important difference here is between having a formal education (diploma or GED) or having none. By design, both denote the same level of education.

Having a high school diploma or GED greatly increases your chances of getting hired and raises your earning potential – preferable to no high school degree at all. Employers generally see typical diplomas and GED’s to be equivalent based on educational qualifications.

However, companies that have standard protocol like banks and the military usually require a completed high school diploma. This shows discipline, that you followed the basic rules and will more than likely do so with employment also.

Now, a new age career such as a video game developer or social media expert…some companies will view that as an asset, that you can think and work independently, kind of like an “out-of-the-box” thinker.

HOW you completed high school or obtained your GED also does not matter if you went to college and continued your education even further. That is seen as above and beyond to companies that are hiring even specific courses directly related to your profession are considered ongoing training and development.
