Congratulations are in order! You’ve landed the position you want. Here’s how to excel at it.
Ask Questions and Take Notes
Starting a position at a brand-new company can be scary. Unknown faces and foreign rules can leave you feeling anxious. A good way to combat this (and also look good) is to ask questions! The first few months at a job is when you should be absorbing as much information as possible, especially if you are unsure about something. When training a new employee, we as employers are always thrilled by individuals asking questions and taking notes.
Be on Time Every Day
Showing up to work on time consistently every day shows your boss that you’re responsible and punctual. No manager likes seeing an employee strolling in ten minutes late every day. Setting alarms, laying your work clothes out the night before, and leaving a few minutes early each day can ensure timely arrival to work. Employers will also take extra notice if you show up early or stay late. This tells them that you’re dedicated to working hard.
Be Flexible and Helpful
Be a team player! Managers love seeing enthusiastic employees willing to help with a new project or fill in for a shift that needs covering. Being flexible and adaptable will not go unnoticed by the people around you. Even performing small acts of kindness such as making coffee in the morning or wiping off a dirty table will stand out. Something else to remember, next time a promotion is available, your manager will most likely think of you for the job!
Stay Modest
Remaining humble will go a long way with people. Try to avoid the phrase “I know”, when being trained, replace it with “I understand”. Longtime employees usually don’t like a know it all, particularly someone that doesn’t know anything about the company or job yet. Take the time to listen and learn before giving advice.
Take Care of Yourself
Don’t burn yourself out. New careers can often be stressful, so take time to recover and recuperate. In the first few months, strive to get plenty of sleep and take time for your mental health. Developing healthy and balanced work and life habits early on will make a tremendous difference in your career!
The most essential thing to remember is to be the type of person you’d want to work alongside. Live your work life by these rules and have a long and successful career!
